Some University of Lethbridge students struggle amid cost of living

Classes are now back in session at Lethbridge's post-secondary institutions, and some students are already looking for financial support.

Classes may have just started for students at the University of Lethbridge, but some are already looking for financial support.

“Cost of living remains a challenge for students, as it does for many of us in society,” said Mark Slomp, executive director of student services. “But there are lots of things that students can do to ensure that they’re able to meet the costs of post-secondary education.”

The university offers support services for students, and the University of Lethbridge Students’ Union (ULSU) runs a food bank that offers hampers and gift cards.

“It’s really disheartening seeing a lot of students losing interest in schooling with the rising costs of housing and everything across the board,” said Bradley Pike, ULSU vice president external. “We’re just trying to do our best to make student life as easy as possible for everyone.”

Emergency bursaries are available to students facing financial hardship.

Students who apply can receive up to $600 for short-term help.

Emergency loans for longer-term financial needs are also available.

“We’re always reevaluating how our services are meeting the needs of students,” said Slomp. “And that translates into different kinds of workshops that we offer annually – and a lot of this is based on student feedback.”
