It’s going to be a messy day for parts of central and southern Alberta as a powerful low pressure system off the U.S. West Coast sends a large quantity of precipitation our way.

On Wednesday, this low dropped down to 979 millibars. That’s the equivalent strength of a Category 2 hurricane!

Typically, these mid-latitude cyclones lose their strength as they move on to land, but this system is stubbornly staying out on the water maintaining its strength.
The system will climb up the West Coast over the next couple of days bringing more wet weather and cooling temperatures.
Here in Calgary, the city is not under that snowfall warning, but that doesn’t mean we won’t be impacted.

Rain showers could begin as early as this morning and later today after we hit our high of 5 C early in the afternoon, more precipitation in the form of wet snow could start to fall right as many are heading home from work.
Snow showers will continue overnight and into Friday as well, that’s when temperatures will also start to take a nosedive.

On Friday, the forecast high is a meagre -3 C!
Saturday is looking to be very similar on the temperature front and also conditions too with lots of clouds and morning flurries.
We finally start to break out of this cold wet weather event on Sunday when a transition in the jet stream will offer a bit more sunshine and a positive high of 2 C.
However, it’s not looking like we will get back into seasonal temperature territory until about mid-week next week!
