‘Refreshed vision’ coming to Exploration Asia at Calgary’s zoo

Work is set to begin at a popular exhibit at the Wilder Institute/Calgary Zoo that will aim to give a closer look at some of Asia’s diverse wildlife.

Officials said its Exploration Asia area will be redeveloped to explore Southeast Asia, the Eastern Himalayas and Northeast Asia.

The zoo hasn’t announced details about what new animals would be on display when the renovations are completed in summer 2026, but officials said some of its species would be leaving the zoo.

That’s to make room for larger, more complex habitats.

“This project is a testament to our unwavering commitment to innovation, education and animal well-being,” said Dr. Kyle Burks, the zoo’s president and CEO, in a statement.

“When the redeveloped Exploration Asia opens in summer 2026, visitors will step into a world of immersive designs, hands-on learning, art and powerful storytelling. Our goal is to foster a deeper connection between our visitors and the incredible animals of this region, while also encouraging action to protect their habitats and ensure their survival.”

The redevelopment of Exploration Asia is expected to begin soon and more information will be shared with visitors in the coming weeks.
