Lethbridge couple celebrates 70th wedding anniversary

Alfred and Lorrian Aasen just reached a big milestone. The Lethbridge couple just marked 70 years together this past weekend.

Every wedding anniversary is a new landmark for married couples, but one Lethbridge husband and wife are celebrating a major milestone.

Alfred and Lorrian Aasen are marking 70 years together.

The two crossed paths at a party on a farm near Brooks, Alta.

“We lived in Brooks – both of us – and we were at a party in the country, and I had gone with one fellow… then Alf showed up and I left with him,” Lorrian said.

It wasn’t long before they got married at a church in Brooks on Nov. 2, 1955.

The couple stuck around Brooks and raised four kids together.

Alfred was a jack of all trades who worked as a carpenter and farmer, while Lorrian spent 40 years practicing as a registered nurse.

The pair moved to Lethbridge in 1997 to retire.

Since then, they’ve focused on travelling together.

“We were in Sweden one winter,” Alfred said. “And then we went to Japan and China for a month. We then we travelled across Canada a couple times in the motorhome down in the States.”

So, what’s their secret to a long marriage?

“I think it’s love and determination,” Lorrian said.

Now in their 90s, the couple has 11 grandchildren and 19 great grandchildren.

It’s been a long road, but both say there’s no one else they’d rather go through life with.
