Joining the race for the city’s top job: Calgary councillor announces candidacy for mayor

Calgary's mayoral race has a new contender as Coun. Sonya Sharp threw her hat in the ring on Monday night.

Sonya Sharp is joining the race to be Calgary’s next mayor.

The current city councillor made the announcement on Monday at an event put on by the Communities First municipal political party.

Sharp said at Monday’s event, “It’s time for a change.”

“Many Calgarians feel that city hall is increasingly out of touch and on the wrong track,” Sharp also said in a release.

“People feel the majority of this council doesn’t listen or care about many of their biggest concerns and often makes decisions despite them, rather than for them. The city shouldn’t run like a big corporation; it should run like a great local government.”
