Interrogation video played in Calgary murder trial for random stabbing

Michael Adenyi, 29, is on trial for first-degree murder in the death of Vanessa Ladouceur, 30.

Crown prosecutors played a portion of a recording of a police interrogation video with murder suspect Michael Adenyi in court on Friday.

Adenyi, 29, is on trial for first-degree murder in the death of Vanessa Ladouceur, 30.

The woman was attacked walking along 10th Avenue S.E. to work at a fitness facility in the early morning of March 18, 2022.

The attack is captured on CCTV footage, and court heard Ladouceur was stabbed eight times in 11 seconds.

On Friday, Det. Scott Mizibrocky testified about his interview with Adenyi at Calgary Police Service headquarters on the afternoon of the attack.

Adenyi was arrested at the Foothills Medical Centre after he showed up with cuts to his hands.

In the video, he’s asked by Mizibrocky what happened to his bandaged hands.

Adenyi tells the officer, “I got cut. I don’t actually really remember.”

Mizibrocky asked the accused whether he ever lies.

Adenyi said, “It kind of depends who I’m speaking to and what their desires are.”

Court heard the man was born in Cairo, Egypt, but moved to Canada when he was one year old.

He lived in Toronto briefly before moving to Fort McMurray and then to Calgary when he was 18 years old.

He told the detective he did not have a job or a fixed address and would get money by asking strangers at places like the mall.

Adenyi told the detectives he had one brother and four sisters, but when asked about his family in the video, he said the topic was private.

Adenyi’s father was also in court and has been throughout the trial.

Several of Ladouceur’s family and friends have also been attending the trial, in addition to many members of the public.

Trial resumes Monday, when it’s expected Mizibrocky’s testimony will continue, along with the remainder of the video.

King’s Bench Justice Jane Sidnell also informed the jury Friday that the trial will likely extend past its scheduled end date of April 25.
