It was another difficult day in court for the family of Vanessa Ladouceur, the Calgary woman who was fatally stabbed in the Beltline three years ago.

Several videos of the random attack were played on Day 2 of the trial.

Michael Adenyi is on trial for first-degree murder in the death of the 30-year-old personal trainer and fitness facility manager.

Ladouceur was attacked and killed along 10th Avenue S.E. while walking to work in the Beltline in the early hours of March 18, 2022.

Several videos presented a timeline of the attack from the moment Ladouceur left her apartment lobby to the moment she was tackled to the ground and stabbed.

CCTV surveillance footage showed the woman leave her apartment and appear to wave to the concierge around 6:27 a.m.

As she walked down 10th Avenue, she appeared to be followed by a man, argued to be the accused, who was in a hoodie on a bright green bike.

Around 6:32 a.m., the man ran up beside her with a dark object in his right hand and tackled her to the ground.

The crown says she was stabbed eight times in 11 seconds.

The man is seen taking off down the street, and Ladouceur is captured picking herself up and staggering out of frame, where she later dies in a tower lobby.

The man is later captured putting on gloves, putting his backpack in a dumpster in a back alley and in another video is no longer wearing his hoodie.

A detective with the Calgary police homicide unit testified Tuesday about discovering some of those items.

Det. Travis Lindemann testified about finding a bike that had been dumped, a backpack in an alleyway and a jacket with blood on it near a dumpster.

He also investigated the accused’s parents after Adenyi was taken into custody when he showed up at a hospital with cuts to his hands.

Lindemann said the man’s mother and father brought medication for officers to give Adenyi.

The medication, which had a prescription label made out to the accused, was fluoxetine hydrochloride, better known for being sold under the brand name of Prozac in the United States.

According to the Canadian government’s Drug and Health Product Register, fluoxetine hydrochloride is prescribed by doctors to treat a number of conditions such as depression, obsessive-compulsive disorder (including recurrent and intrusive thoughts, feelings, ideas or sensations) and bulimia.

However, no further details of the accused’s medical history have been revealed in court.

Mark Ruggieri, a crime and intelligence panelist with Calgary police, also testified about searches he conducted on the accused’s social media accounts.

Family and friends of Ladouceur filled several rows in the courtroom gallery on Day 2 of the jury trial.

The young woman’s mother, Erika Ladouceur, told CTV News her daughter was very spiritual, intelligent and an avid reader.

She said Ladouceur and her sister were born and lived in Toronto but moved to Calgary when they were two and three years old.

“It was just the three of us, the three musketeers, we would say,” she said.

She expressed the difficulty of sitting in court and hearing for the first time what led to her daughter’s death.

On Monday, the first day of the trial, a man who witnessed the attack and a woman who tried to help the woman in her final moments took the stand.

The trial is slated to run until April 25.
