Flood project expected to impact traffic on Memorial Drive

Published:

There are some changes to traffic flow on a major Calgary road due to work that's expected to last until October.

If you use Memorial Drive as part of your daily commute, you should expect to see some slowdowns starting Monday.

The city says work in the Sunnyside flood barrier project is switching into a new phase that will lead to impacts to traffic on the busy route.

Work will close eastbound Memorial Drive between 10 Street and Centre Street N.W.

The westbound lanes of Memorial will handle two-way traffic while crews are at the scene.

Flood project expected to impact traffic on Memorial Drive Commuters who use Memorial Drive on a daily basis should be aware of a long-term closure of a section of the busy route, which starts April 7, 2025, and continues through to October.

The project will also close several pathways between the Peace Bridge and the Prince’s Island Park pedestrian bridge.

The Sunnyside flood barrier will be approximately 2.4 kilometres long and will include a combination of permanent flood walls and sheet walls as well as temporary systems that can be deployed as needed.

The city says it’s designed to manage flood water and prevent the damage the city experienced in 2013 and “providing the building blocks for future climate resiliency.”

The closures are expected to remain until October.
