Calgary’s NMC celebrating 50th anniversary of ‘Phantom of the Paradise’ with double feature

Winnipegger Rod Warkentin explains the city’s love affair with Brian De Palma’s 1974 glam-rock opera Phantom of the Paradise and the documentary it spawned.

Calgary’s National Music Centre is celebrating the 50th anniversary of the film Phantom of the Paradise with a double feature this weekend.

Studio Bell will screen both Brian De Palma’s rock opera and the award-winning documentary Phantom of Winnipeg on March 29.

“Phantom of Winnipeg covers the wild and wonderful phenomenon that saw Winnipeg embrace all things Phantom of the Paradise,” Studio Bell said on its website.

“Come watch the reason why Winnipeg proudly claims its title as the only city to wholeheartedly embrace the film when it first came out back in 1974.”

The Original New Timbral Orchestra (TONTO), which is housed at Studio Bell as part of its “living collection,” is featured in the original film.

The show starts at 7 p.m., with doors opening at 6 p.m.
