A Calgary man, 18, is facing charges after a stabbing in downtown Calgary on Friday night.
Police said shortly after 8 p.m., a fight occurred between the teen and a man in his 40s in the 700 block of Fourth Street S.E.
The man made his way to a nearby restaurant whose staff called police. The man was taken to hospital in life-threatening condition but has since been upgraded to serious but stable condition.
Police say the victim and the suspect did not know each other, but they had an interaction inside the restaurant, followed by the physical altercation outside.
Police developed a suspect description through witness interviews and CCTV images. A suspect was tentatively identified after further investigation.
On Sunday, officers patrolling downtown saw a man matching the suspect description in the 400 block of Sixth Avenue S.E.
He was arrested and searched, with officers finding more than 1,200 unstamped illegal cigarettes in his possession.
The 18-year-old man has been charged with aggravated assault and fraud under $5,000.
“We have seen several verbal altercations leading to violent physical altercations between people,” Staff Sgt. Derek Klassen, lead of the Safer Calgary initiative, said in a news release.
“If you see something concerning, call 911 for an incident in progress where safety is a concern, or 2-1-1 to be referred to non-emergency mental health or addictions crisis supports.”
The man remains in custody and is scheduled to appear in court on April 2.
