The City of Calgary is looking for your feedback on the future of Cowboys Park in west downtown.
The city has opened an online public engagement portal to influence its improvement work on the park, formerly known as Millennium Park, specifically regarding the kinds of events and activities that could be offered.
“We want to hear your ideas on how to make its next chapter more welcoming, accessible and attractive year-round,” Allison Fifield, the city’s community parks initiatives lead, said in a Monday news release.
Starting this month, the city has been working to transform the park into a more “modern and multi-functional event space.”
While the layout of the park, including the skate park and beach volleyball and basketball courts, will remain the same, the city wants to know how Calgarians think the park can best be used.
“That includes things like how they will experience the park, what activity options they want to enjoy and what support amenities and accessibility or safety improvements may be required,” the city said.
As part of the first phase of construction, the city will be working to improve utilities, electrical infrastructure and two hardened surfaces.
The hardened surfaces are meant to better accommodate Calgarians with mobility considerations and make it easier to host events like farmers’ and holiday markets, sports and other recreational events and food festivals.
The first phase of work will require the removal of 50-80 trees in the area to fulfill the underground utility work, the city says.
The work is expected to be completed by June to accommodate spring and summer events.
Parts of park sidewalks and green space will be closed during construction. The basketball courts will also be closed and are anticipated to reopen in June or July.
The online engagement portal will be open from March 31 to April 21. The city plans to share a report on the engagement process in May.
