Alleged notebooks of accused killer revealed at trial for stabbing death of Calgary woman

The medical examiner and a police officer testified Monday at the murder trial of a man accused of randomly stabbing a Calgary woman in the Beltline in 2022.

Two red notebooks with disturbing, nonsensical notes and sketches were presented in court on Day 4 of the trial for the stabbing death of 30-year-old Calgary woman Vanessa Ladouceur.

The notebooks allegedly belong to Michael Adenyi, who is charged with first-degree murder.

Adenyi is accused of randomly, fatally attacking Ladouceur while she walked along 10th Avenue S.E. to work at a gym in the early morning of March 18, 2022.

According to the crown, CCTV footage played in court reveals Adenyi followed Ladouceur on a bike and then on foot before tackling her into an alcove and stabbing her eight times in 11 seconds.

The footage also showed what is believed to be the accused fleeing the scene before dumping his backpack in a garbage can in a downtown alley, which was later seized by police.

On Thursday, forensic crime scene investigator Const. Ian Oxton went through the contents of two red notebooks found in the bag.

One contained several pages of disjointed notes, including one page where “three people to kill” was written down.

Another had a heading to “beat up three times, rape and torture” followed by a list of names, including celebrities such as Jim Carrey, Blake Lively and Ryan Reynolds.

It also listed locations, including “hang out at movies” and “Cabela’s Calgary.”

The notebook also contained details to “masturbate once a day” and another to “not masturbate for a week.”

There were several sketches of faces and what Oxton described as “a boxer; it looks like he’s wearing boxing gloves.”

The jury heard earlier in the trial that Adenyi had a prescription for fluoxetine hydrochloride, or what’s commonly known as Prozac, which is often prescribed by doctors to treat a number of conditions, including depression, obsessive-compulsive disorder and bulimia.

However, no further details of the accused’s medical history have been revealed in court.

Several of Ladouceur’s family and friends have been in the courtroom gallery since the start of the trial, in addition to some members of the public.

An expert witness in DNA is expected to testify Thursday afternoon.

The trial is scheduled to run until April 25.
