2 injured, including a child, in northwest Calgary crash

Residents and drivers near where an adult and child were hit by a vehicle say there are traffic safety concerns in the area.

Calgary police say two pedestrians, an adult and a child, were seriously hurt when they were hit by a vehicle in Dalhousie on Thursday.

Emergency crews were called to the scene, at Dalhousie Drive and Dalgleish Road N.W., at about 8:45 a.m.

Police say the adult was taken to hospital in serious condition while the child was also injured.

EMS told CTV News that the injuries to both individuals are non-life-threatening.

Alex Kwan with the Calgary Fire Department said when they arrived, they found two patients at the scene pinned under the vehicle.

“Our crews on our front line engines have basic extrication equipment, so they were able to lift the vehicle and quickly free one of the patients and pass them to EMS,” he said.

“The other patient needed a little more work to get access to.”

Once that patient was freed, CFD worked with EMS and police to secure the scene.

A driver who spoke to CTV News said he was following the vehicle that hit the pedestrians.

“The sun was very bright and (it was) difficult to see,” said Wayne Marshall.

“I jumped out and saw the one laying on the ground there and didn’t realize the other was still underneath the vehicle. Other people were there and trying to get her out.”

Residents concerned about traffic safety

Mandy Gellenbeck, who lives in the area, says she has concerns about traffic safety.

“There are so many times where I’ve seen, even when people press the button for the flashing lights for crossing, even though this is a 30 km/h zone, people are whipping fast all the time,” she said.

“Even when the lights are on, people will scream by.”

Gellenbeck says it isn’t the first time this has happened.

“Very scary. My daughter and her friends play outside all the time.”

Kwan says when seasons are changing, driving conditions do too, so he wants drivers and pedestrians to be aware of the dangers.

“We’re working closely with CPS as much as possible and EMS,” he said. “As people get into the routine of things - daylight changes, hours, all these different factors - we have seen a lot more collisions.

“It’s super important that we are watching around any intersection.”

Dalhousie Drive was closed in both directions between Shaganappi Trail and 53 Street N.W. for several hours after the crash.

It was reopened at 11:30 a.m.
