Charges have been laid after police say a man drove a stolen U-Haul truck dangerously through Calgary’s southwest on Wednesday night.
Police say the U-Haul truck, reported stolen, was spotted in Southwood just before 9:30 p.m.
An attempt was made to pull the vehicle over along Anderson Road near 14 Street S.W., but the driver fled, police say.
According to police, the driver fled at high speed, ran red lights and later, along 210 Avenue S.W., drove into oncoming traffic.
Police blew two of the vehicle’s tires in the Legacy area, near Macleod Trail S.W., but say the driver continued.
The driver went into oncoming traffic again along Macleod near Shawnessy Boulevard S.W., police say.
Police followed the vehicle to a residence in the 11000 block of Sacramento Drive S.W., and say the driver then struck three police vehicles and several parked civilian vehicles.
According to police, the driver continued to the 14000 block of Macleod Trail S.W. before finally stopping.
Alec John McLennan, 28, has been arrested in connection with Wednesday night’s incident.
He’s been charged with the following:
- Dangerous driving;
- Flight from police;
- Hit-and-run;
- Possession of stolen property over $5,000; and
- Failing to comply with a court order (x3).
Police say he had outstanding criminal warrants and a suspended licence.
He was taken to hospital following his arrest, police say, and treated for minor injuries.
He’ll appear in court in Calgary on April 10.
