Multiple Toyota models recalled due to steering wheel issue

Several popular Toyota models have been recalled due to an airbag issue that could pose a safety risk.

A recall posted Jan. 29 and updated Monday warns of an issue that could prevent the driver’s airbag from deploying in a crash.

The recall applies to the 2023 Corolla, Corolla Cross, Highlander and Tacoma.

“On certain vehicles, the steering wheel spiral cable assembly could disconnect,” reads a notice to drivers.

“If this happens, the airbag (SRS) warning lamp could turn on, and the driver-front airbag wouldn’t work in a crash,” the notice continues. “This may also cause the horn or other steering wheel-mounted controls not to work properly.”

The models listed were subject to a previous recall in 2023. The latest advisory says the inspection at that time “may not have been done correctly,” and asks drivers to bring their vehicles in even if they were inspected two years ago.

Owners are advised to contact the manufacturer or check online if they’re unsure if the recall applies to them.
