Porsche 911 R looks subtle but puts out pure performance

Porsche unveiled its new limited-edition 911 R, a lightweight limited-production sports car available only with a manual transmission, at the Geneva Motor Show.

The 911 R is a throwback to Porsche’s intended-for-street-use homologation race cars of the past, and boasts pure performance without a lot of flash.

At just 1,370 kg, it’s one of the lightest versions of Porsche’s current 911, and with the 500 horsepower and 338 lb-ft of torque it cranks out of its four-litre flat-six, it’s got plenty of motivation. All that power is channeled through a six-speed manual and converted into zero-to-100 km/h times of 3.8 seconds and a top speed of 323 km/h (200 mph).

Its low curb weight is achieved in part by the use of a carbon-fibre hood and wings and magnesium roof, as well as the omission of a back seat and insulation. A radio and A/C are optional.

The looks of the 911 R give away little; yes, it has a front and rear apron from the 911 GT3, but besides that, it’s mostly just the red or green stripes that warn other drivers of the fact this 911 is a featherweight heavy-hitter.

Inside, the R gets an exclusive short-throw shifter and GT steering wheel, plus carbon bucket seats with tartan inserts, another throwback.

The 2017 Porsche 911 R hits Canadian showrooms in fall 2016, and will start at $211,000. Production will be limited to just 991 units globally.
