Toronto man charged with stunt driving on city street in Barrie

A motorist from Toronto accused of speeding nearly twice the posted limit on a city street in Barrie while on his phone faces charges.

Police say an officer spotted the vehicle Wednesday morning travelling 98 kilometres per hour along Ferndale Drive, and allege the driver was using his cell.

The 33-year-old man was charged with speeding in the posted 50km/h zone and stunt driving with a handheld device.

His licence was immediately suspended for 30 days and the vehicle was towed away to an impound yard, where it will remain for 14 days.

Police say officers with the Barrie traffic unit conduct proactive patrols day and night across the city utilizing technology to keep the public safe.

"As a police service, we often remind the public that road safety is a shared responsibility, and from time to time, the public shares their concerns with us through the identification of an area that they feel requires our attention," Peter Leon, corporate communications coordinator with Barrie police stated in a release on Thursday.
