Police share self-rescue tips as temps rise and ice thins

As April weather is fast approaching and temperatures are on the incline, its that time where thick wintery ice begins to thaw. Ontario Provincial Police are asking residents to take extra precautions when venturing near melting bodies of water.

In a social media post from OPP Highway Safety Division, Sgt. Kerry Schmidt took part in cold-water survival training, demonstrating how to self-rescue if you find yourself in an icky, or as one would say ‘icy’ situation. Decked out in full safety gear, Schmidt immersed himself in the frigid March waters.

“Falling into cold water can be terrifying and dangerous,” Schmidt said. “Having the right equipment and knowing what to do could make all the difference.”

Police say rescue methods apply to anyone near ice-covered water, including snowshoers, snowmobilers, ice fishers, or even adventurous dog walkers enjoying the warmer temps.

Following the 1-10-1 rule can help prevent the possible dangers of cold-water immersion, shared OPP. If you fall into a lake or river, here is what the 1-10-1 rule can do for you:

• You have one minute to control breathing after the initial shock.
• 10 minutes of meaningful movement before muscle function starts to decline.
• And, one hour before hypothermia leads to unconsciousness.

If possible, police advise you to concentrate on self-rescue during the first 10 minutes of your fall. If self-rescue is not possible, police say holding onto the edge of the ice will slow heat loss and increase survival rate. Conserving energy is key.

Ice safety: What to check before stepping in or around ice

OPP stress that ice conditions can change rapidly due to weather fluctuations and fresh snowfall, which can conceal thin or weak ice. Here are a few things police say to keep your eyes on during the winter thaw.

Ice colour matters:

Dull ice is unsafe and indicates water content. It will not support much weight and is common in spring or areas with moving water.

White opaque or “snow ice” is only half as strong as blue ice and forms when wet snow freezes on top of existing ice. It can be deceptively dangerous if the lower ice has not solidified, shared police.

Blue ice is the strongest and safest. It forms when temperatures drop below -8C, giving it a clear, deep-blue appearance.
