Police have charged a community support worker from Newmarket after they allege a vulnerable individual was defrauded of thousands of dollars.
York Regional Police (YRP) say a family member of the alleged victim came forward in November to report that between 2021 and 2023, more than $10,000 had been withdrawn from the victim’s account.
“The victim, who is a vulnerable member of the community, would not have been able to complete these transactions themselves,” police noted.
YRP says the accused, Michelle Mason, 44, was employed to assist with the individual’s daily living and financial support. The allegations against Mason have not been tested in court.
Investigators believe more people may have been victimized, noting Mason worked for multiple organizations that assist vulnerable individuals.
Police urge anyone with information on this investigation to contact the District Criminal Investigations Bureau at 1-866-876-5423, ext. 7141, or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 to leave an anonymous tip.
