Instead of following fixed bus routes, Bradford residents can now request for a bus to pick them up closer to home.
The Town of Bradford West Gwillimbury launched a new on-demand transit system on Thursday, allowing residents to request a ride near their door.
According to the town, residents can request a ride through an app and the service will pick them up near their home for a standard fare.
The service is being delivered through Argo Transit, which features technology that can dynamically add stops based on rider demand.
“This is a landmark day for Bradford West Gwillimbury,” said James Leduc, mayor of Bradford West Gwillimbury, in a news release. “Being the first community worldwide to deploy Argo’s vertically integrated Smart Routing transit solution demonstrates our leadership in innovation and our commitment to improving residents’ quality of life.”
The town listed benefits of the service that include increased access, reduced traffic, taxpayer savings through a reduction in cost per ride, eco-friendliness and more local job opportunities in the technology sector.
The town confirms that the fleet for the service is fully electric and that their gradual rollout will replace fixed bus routes in the coming months.
