Health Minister announces plans to include millions under expanded dental coverage

Kamal Khera, federal minister of health, was in Newmarket Saturday morning to announce expanded dental care coverage for eligible Canadians.

According to Health Canada, the Canadian Dental Care Plan (CDCP) improved access to affordable dental care by approving more than 3.4 million Canadians in its first year, with 1.7 million having already received care.

Saturday’s announcement means that all remaining eligible Canadians from 18 to 64 years-old will be able to apply for the CDCP in May and receive coverage as early as June 1.

“Expanding the CDCP to all eligible Canadians is a big step forward in improving the health and well-being of millions across the country,” said Khera, media release. “Access to affordable dental care is vital for Canadians to enable better health outcomes, reduce barriers to care and alleviate pressure on our health care system. This next step is only possible because of the continued support and participation of oral health providers across the country.”

Health Canada says applications will open on May 1 for those aged 55 to 64, May 15 for those aged 18 to 34, and May 29 for those aged 35 to 54.

Health Canada adds that eligibility criteria for CDCP coverage is as follows:

- Applicants must not have access to dental insurance.

- Applicants must have filed their individual 2024 tax return in Canada.

- Applicants must have an adjusted net family income of less than $90,000.

- Applicants must be Canadian residents for tax purposes.

Those eligible for the CDCP can apply online, by phone, or by visiting a Service Canada Centre.

Current CDCP members are advised by Health Canada that they must renew their coverage from March 2025 onward after filing their 2024 tax return and receiving their 2024 notice of assessment.

Renewal applications must be submitted by June 1 to ensure uninterrupted coverage.
