Drivers reminded that snowmobiling trails are not for cars after two vehicles get stuck

Police are reminding the public to avoid snowmobiling trails with their cars after two vehicles reportedly got stuck on trails in Oro-Medonte this past week.

According to Orillia OPP, the first incident occurred on Thursday, where a driver called police at around 3:45 p.m. after their vehicle got stuck on an Ontario Federation of Snowmobile Clubs (OFSC) trail. Police say several tow trucks made it to the scene and were able to remove the vehicle.

Then, at around 3:30 a.m. Sunday morning, police say a first vehicle became stuck on an OFSC trail and then a second vehicle got stuck trying to rescue it. Police confirmed that the stranded individuals were able to make it to a local business to warm up.

No injuries were reported in the two incidents. However, police note that the stranded individuals in both cases battled extreme cold conditions, and that their outcomes could have been worse.

Officers remind drivers that OFSC snow trails are not assumed roadways for passenger vehicles, and to only drive on assumed highways.

Safety kits with items that include candles, portable phone chargers, blankets and non-perishable food items are highly recommended for winter travel.
