Clothing swap encourages sustainable fashion, supports young athletes

Looking to do some spring cleaning of your wardrobe? An upcoming event has got you covered and it’s all in support of a worthy cause.

The Town of Wasaga Beach is encouraging people to drop off previously worn and loved clothing in exchange for someone else’s. Not only will the event support sustainable fashion, but it will help young athletes too.

The Love It Longer Swap is coming to the Wasaga Beach RecPlex on Mosley Street May 8 to 10 with money raised going to the Wasaga Beach Figure Skating Club.

The funds will go towards the purchase of a training jump harness, an apparatus used to help skaters safely learn and land jumps.

In a world of fast fashion, communities are coming up with their own ways to encourage people to hop on board with sustainable fashion and environmentally friendly clothing options.

“This event shows how small choices – like reusing clothing – can have a big impact,” said Wasaga Beach Mayor Brian Smith. “You’re not just updating your wardrobe and keeping textiles out of landfills – you’re helping local kids train safer, dream bigger and succeed on the ice.”

The event will operate under a pay once, take what you like system, so attendees pay a flat entry fee and can take home as many pieces of clothing they want.

Visitors will want to make a point to come on Friday night for First Dibs Friday, to get their first pick. The evening will offer mocktails and music in a spring-like atmosphere filled with florals and patio lanterns, offering a boutique-style experience.

The clothing swap will also have a seamstress on hand to help with any repairs needed, a way to extend the life of items even longer.

Donations will be accepted at the RecPlex from May 6 to 8 from 12 p.m. to 7 p.m. in advance of the event. Gently used clothing, outerwear, shoes, accessories and toys will be accepted.

The Fri., May 8 is from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. and Sat., May 9 and Sun., May 10 will be from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Tickets, $20 for Friday and $15 for Saturday and Sunday, can be purchased in advance online or at the door.
