Two P.E.I. youths face 20 charges for allegedly joyriding in stolen vehicles

Two youths are facing 20 charges after they allegedly went joyriding in four stolen vehicles and caused property damage in Stratford, P.E.I., one night in October.

The RCMP says the vehicles were stolen from residential driveways overnight on Oct. 18 and 19. Three of the vehicles were returned to their owners or abandoned nearby and found badly damaged, while the fourth was found under a transport truck trailer in the parking lot of Stratford Home Hardware.

Police also believe the youths drove the vehicles recklessly throughout the community, causing significant property damage.

Stratford RCMP laid 20 charges against two youths on Monday. The charges include theft of motor vehicles, mischief over $5,000, and trespassing at night.

The youths are due to appear in Charlottetown provincial court on Dec. 22.

“These were serious offences that put the public and the youth involved at real risk. The level of damage left behind speaks for itself,” said Chief Supt. Kevin Lewis, commanding officer for the P.E.I. RCMP.

“This case was solved through the hard work and persistence of our investigators, combined with the support of community members. When people share what they see or hear, it makes a significant difference in our ability to keep our neighbourhoods safe.”

Police continue to ask anyone with information that could assist in the investigation to contact the Stratford RCMP at 902-367-9300.

Meanwhile, they are also reminding motorists to lock their vehicles.

“All four stolen vehicles had been left unlocked with their keys inside,” said the RCMP. “This incident serves as a remind to everyone about the importance of not leaving keys in a vehicle and locking your doors.”
