‘Star of Christmas’ sing-along lifts spirits at Halifax tree lighting as weather dampens finale

Halifax's Christmas tree lights briefly flickered on before going dark Saturday night, likely due to weather-related technical issues.

It didn’t exactly feel like Christmas Saturday, but a large crowd gathered at Halifax’s Grand Parade to celebrate the season.

Despite the pouring rain, people were happy to be there for the annual tree lighting.

“We are so excited,” said one attendee who is from Spain.

Tree lightings often help kick off the holidays for many people, but a special feature at this year’s ceremony was uniquely Maritime.

“We’re so excited to be partnering with Sobeys to bring back Star of Christmas for the largest ever sing-along of this iconic and beloved Atlantic Canadian jingle,” said Jack Bennet with The Big Sing.

The Big Sing is a Halifax-based group that leads sing-alongs, billed as “one-part concert, one-part kitchen party, and three-part harmony.”

The Star of Christmas jingle dates back to an iconic Sobeys commercial from 1987. It aired annually until 2004.

“We also heard that some people from the original commercial are in the crowd,” said Caitlin Bowers with The Big Sing.

Before the event, people could pick up a lyric sheet to refresh their memories and join in a quick warm-up.

“We’re just so honoured to be playing a small role in this great event,” said Bennet.

The sing-along began around 6 p.m. and appeared to be straight out of a Christmas movie, as the crowd gathered to share in the moment – some for the first time.

“I’m new to Nova Scotia, so it’s a first for me, but I’ll learn it,” said one woman.

For others, the song transported them in time.

“It’s lovely. Gets you in the Christmas spirit. It’s great,” said an attendee.

“Brings back memories from when we were younger,” said another.

Following the sing-along and some other festive activities, it was time for the main event: the tree lighting led by Santa Claus.

As the crowd counted down from 10, the tree briefly flickered on before going dark. It remained dark, likely due to weather-related technical issues. CTV News has reached out to Halifax Regional Municipality for more information.

Fireworks still lit up the night sky to cap off the event.
