Nova Scotia woman celebrates cancer-free milestone with return of comedy fundraiser

The Geeks vs. Nerds comedy show returned to raise money for programs at the QEII Health Sciences Centre.

A Nova Scotia woman celebrated being five years cancer free with a comedy fundraiser Friday night in Halifax.

Cat Green was diagnosed with cervical cancer in early 2020 and had surgery in the early days of the pandemic.

“I did alright and I was well-supported. And not everyone who experiences an illness has that same luxury that I had to be supported by family and friends and having the financial means,” said Green.

“Thinking about how to celebrate my milestone, I really wanted to give back.”

Green reached out to her friends at Geeks versus Nerds, an award-winning, debate style comedy show that hasn’t been on stage since 2018.

“Everyone was really excited to put on the show one more time,” said Green.

The show took place Friday night in the McInnes Room at Dalhousie University and raised money for the QEII Foundation Patient Assistance Fund.

“Basically, patients at the QEII who have experienced financial hardship because of their illness are supported through these donor-funded programs through the QEII Foundation,” said Green.

The event raised funds for an important initiative but Green said it was a night of comedic debates about topics like Minecraft versus Lego, or 90s slang versus corporate speak.

“Just silly topics to kind of get the party started,” said Green.

“The main debate was Captain Jean-Luc Picard from Star Trek versus Steve Rogers – Captain America from Marvel – which of those captains gave more for the cause, and so that’s debated. That’s the structure of the show, and it’s very much meant to be a comedy show.”
