Nova Scotia SPCA launches official tartan, partners with local business for fundraiser

The Nova Scotia SPCA gets its own official tartan.

Now, there’s a tartan for that.

The Nova Scotia SPCA has launched its own official tartan to honour the organization and the animals it serves.

The tartan, which is officially registered with the Scottish Register of Tartans, is made of material woven in the United Kingdom with the help of British textile mill Marton Mills Co.

The charity says it chose the following colours to represent different elements of the organization and province:

• red for the Mi’kmaq people
• gold for more than 400 years of contributions of people of African descent
• silver represents protection and the SPCA’s founding as the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty
• blue to represent welcoming newcomers to the shores of Nova Scotia
• green, the colour of new beginnings – for animals, people and families
• white, the eternal colour of hope, to represent hope for a future where animals are safe and healthy

The SPCA has teamed up with local small business Tartan Gal Designs to create handmade items using the woven fabric, with the money supporting the organization.

From collars and leashes to scrunchies and neckties, there are items for both the animal and animal lover in your life.

Founded in 1877, the SPCA helps companion animals in need. The charity says it helped more than 24,000 animals in 2024. There are six SPCA shelters in Nova Scotia.
