Nova Scotia announced the creation of 70 new child-care spaces in Pictou County Friday.
A $2.7-million investment in infrastructure will improve access to child care in the area, according to a news release from the province.
“We know families are eager for child care that is close to home,” said Pictou West MLA Marco MacLeod on behalf of Education and Early Childhood Development Minister Brendan Maguire.
“These new spaces in Pictou County create more options for Nova Scotians in these communities as we work toward our goal of creating 9,500 new child-care spaces by March 31, 2026.”
Fifty of the new spaces opened in February at the YMCA of Pictou County.
“Child care had been identified as a barrier by our group and the medical community and we are so pleased to partner with the Province, the YMCA of Pictou County and the Pictou County Wellness Centre Building Authority for this project to bring much-needed child-care spaces to our community,” said Murray Hill, chair of Citizens for a Healthy Pictou County.
The province says Citizens for a Healthy Pictou County received funding from the Early Learning and Child Care Major Infrastructure Program for 20 additional spaces opening in June.
