More affordable housing for students coming to Nova Scotia’s Annapolis Valley

The Nova Scotia government says students in the Annapolis Valley will soon have access to more affordable housing.

Student Housing Nova Scotia has purchased four multi-unit buildings containing 22 units in Lawrencetown, near the Nova Scotia Community College’s Centre of Geographic Sciences campus.

It has also purchased three multi-unit buildings containing 34 units in Kingston, within a short drive to the NSCC’s Kingstec campus in Kentville and Annapolis Valley campus in Middleton.

The province says students will be given priority when the units become available, but enrolment at a post-secondary institution isn’t a requirement. People already living in the buildings will not be displaced by students.

“It is just as important to preserve affordable housing as it is to build new units,” said provincial Housing Minister John White. “We are grateful for our partners in the community housing sector for their support in our government’s efforts to provide more affordable housing throughout our province.”

Student Housing Nova Scotia received $6.9 million in loans from the province’s Community Housing Acquisition Program and $530,000 through the Community Housing Capital Fund.

The province says repayable loans at fixed rates from the Community Housing Acquisition Program are available for up to 95 per cent of the property cost. Loans are available for up to 30 years, to a maximum of $10 million per project.
