Halifax man remembers witnessing Joe Carter’s historic 1993 World Series home run

A Nova Scotia man looks back on the 1993 World Series – when he watched Joe Carter hit his historic homerun to win it all for the Blue Jays.

When Joe Carter sent the pitch over the left field wall in Game 6 of the ’93 World Series, JC Douglas was there to see it fly, but he didn’t immediately know it was a three-run homer.

“I was the last person in Canada, I think, to know it was a home run,” said Douglas, who still has that historic home run moment on tape.

It was captured from the outfield bleacher on his family’s home video camera.

From where Douglas was sitting, he had a view of Carter’s hit, but he didn’t see where it landed below.

“I thought it just dropped in,” said Douglas. “It looked like a long single or double to me.”

But Carter’s drive cleared the fence and amid the jubilation, Douglas glanced at the scoreboard and then he realized what had happened.

“That was a home run,” I said. “And everyone was like, ‘Yeah!’”

These days, you’ll find Douglas calling bingo Monday nights on CTV2 and when he called “I-27” this week, he was ready.

Douglas was wearing his baby blue Vladimir Guerrero Jr. jersey with No. 27 on his back, and he turned to the camera as he called the bingo number, showing the number on his back.

Now, 32 years later, the Jays are back in the World Series again and, looking back, Douglas said he felt lucky to be in attendance that night when the Jays won back-to-back World Series titles.

While Douglas won’t be in the stands this time when the Jays play the defending champions, the Los Angeles Dodgers, he’ll be following every pitch from home.

“I was happy to pay $36 for a seat back in 1993,” he said.

Tickets available from resellers for Game 1 of the World Series in Toronto are expensive, with some of the cheapest tickets going for more than $2,300.
