Halifax hockey fan caught singing on camera gets shoutout from Shania Twain

A Maritime Shania Twain fan gets a social media shoutout from the Queen of Country Pop.

Katrina Turcotte went to her first Halifax Mooseheads game in the 1990s and has been a season ticket holder for the last three years.

“I just love the atmosphere,” she says.

During a recent game, she was singing along to Shania Twain’s hit “Man! I Feel Like a Woman!” when the camera locked on her. Her partner tapped her on the leg to let her know.

“He points up (to the jumbotron) and I went, ‘Oh my gosh,’” she recalls. “It was a moment.”

She admits she was a bit nervous, with the spotlight on her and nearly 10,000 people in the rink. But she was proudly showing her true colours.

“I love music, I love to move, I love to dance,” she says. “It’s just who I am.”

She was worried when she was first told that moment was posted online, “because we all know how negative the internet can be.”

“I felt I was going to be ridiculed,” she says.

That’s been anything but the case, with more than 300,000 views across the team’s social media platforms.

“To see so much positivity, and from other women too, it’s rare when women uplift other women,” she says. “It’s great.”

As if that support wasn’t enough, the “Queen of Country Pop” herself, Shania Twain, tweeted the viral moment, saying ‘Yes girl!’ with a heart on fire emoji.

“I’m a very proud Canadian and I love Shania, who is a very proud Canadian,” she says. “It’s great. I think it’s great that she did a little shout-out to me. Thank you so much, Shania! That was amazing!”

Ryan MacDonald, the gameday operations manager for the Halifax Mooseheads, says creating a great atmosphere is a key part of the fan experience

“Sometimes, we get lucky in catching a crowd shot of somebody singing along, and Katrina was just in the right place at the right time,” he says. “Everybody loves a Shania Twain song.

“It happened, and she was pretty oblivious to it until the very end, which I think made the video a whole lot better. It’s awesome to be recognized by Shania as well.”
