Greenwich, N.S., home damaged by fire, no one injured

A home in Greenwich, N.S., was damaged by fire Wednesday night.

Firefighters responded to the home on Birch Drive at 6:35 p.m.

Crews found fire breaking through a wall on the second storey of the home and in the attic.

Greenwich Volunteer Fire Department Chief Jason Ripley said they were able to quickly contain the fire to a single room and the attic space above it.

No one was injured.

“During the incident firefighters were forced to contend with challenges created by particularly cold weather conditions, with temperatures at the time of -13 degrees, this caused equipment to freeze and made for extremely slippery working conditions,” Ripley said in a news release.

Crews remained on scene dealing with hot spots until shortly before 9 p.m.

The owners of the home and a tenant in a downstairs apartment are staying with relatives.

The cause of the fire is not considered suspicious. Investigators believe it originated around the home’s chimney.
