Five Nova Scotians receive province’s highest honour Tuesday

Five people were appointed to the Order of Nova Scotia on Tuesday.

An investiture ceremony happened Tuesday morning in Halifax for the latest group of people appointed to the Order of Nova Scotia.

The order’s newest members were announced last December.

Lt.-Gov. Mike Savage said they have each made have made meaningful contributions in a broad range of fields and communities across the province.

The recipients are:

• former premier and lawyer Darrell Dexter of Liverpool
• philanthropist and entrepreneur John George (Jack) Flemming of Halifax
• business and community leader Rankin MacSween of Ironville
• artist and philanthropist Joel Plaskett of Dartmouth
• educator, human rights and community advocate Carolyn G. Thomas of East Preston

“It’s hugely meaningful and a huge honour and a surprise,” said Plaskett. “I just feel really fortunate. It’s a privilege to be honoured in this way and recognized for being in this province the way I have been in it.”

The investiture ceremony was held at Government House, where Savage presented the new members with their insignia and appointment scroll.

The Order of Nova Scotia is the highest honour in the province, with 132 members invested since it was established in June 2001.
