Broadbent Sisters light up Halifax with wild, immersive art show

Published:

A new Halifax exhibit features artwork, a film and a live performance.

It’s part art show, part performance and part underworld spa.

That’s how the Broadbent Sisters describe their immersive, multi-sensory exhibition, which opens Friday at Katzman Art Projects in Halifax.

“We love art that is fun, playful, lighthearted,” Rose Broadbent said in an interview with CTV News Atlantic’s Katie Kelly. “We just really love freaking people out.”

The Toronto-based duo—Joy and Rose Broadbent—are known for blending performance art with elements of sculpture, film and ritual. Their latest exhibition transforms the gallery into a surreal, healing space complete with candles, shells, chains and wax-based artworks that double as sculptural candles.

“They bring in this kind of wild, wonderful sense of magic and alchemy using a very feminine, kind of fecund place of beauty and growth,” said Marianne Katzman, director and owner of Katzman Art Projects. “It’s different than what most people expect from an art exhibition here.”

The opening night show includes a 45-minute AI-generated film, alongside live performance art where the sisters appear braided together in costume, symbolizing their deep creative bond.

“It’s very much like an underworld spa,” said Joy. “So you’re going to experience this therapeutic, meditative, strange night.”

The exhibition runs until April 19 and marks the Broadbent Sisters’ first show in Halifax. Katzman says she’s long admired their art and is thrilled to host them.
