Man sentenced to jail for driving while impaired with loaded gun in vehicle: N.B. RCMP

A 28-year-old man from Quebec will spend almost a month in jail after he was caught driving while impaired and with a loaded gun in his vehicle in New Brunswick.

The sentence comes after the RCMP conducted a traffic stop on Duke Street in Campbellton around 2 a.m. on Oct. 17. When the driver got out of his vehicle, police say the officer could see a firearm “in plain sight.”

Police arrested the man for impaired driving and searched the vehicle.

“During the search, police seized a loaded, unsecured firearm, ammunition, a bullet proof vest, brass knuckles, and drug paraphernalia,” said the RCMP in a news release Monday.

Drake John Eric Guitard Metallic of Listuguj, Que., pleaded guilty to the following charges in Campbellton provincial court on Nov. 3:

• three counts of failing to comply with a release order
• unsafe storage of a firearm
• operation of a motor vehicle while impaired
• unauthorized possession of a firearm
• driving a motor vehicle while suspended

Guitard was sentenced to 27 days in jail, followed by 12 months of probation. He was also fined $1,500, is prohibited from possessing firearms for 10 years and is prohibited from driving for 12 months.
