Fire, frost and hurricanes update as October begins

Gusty winds are creating adverse wildfire conditions in the Maritimes Wednesday. Both storms in the Atlantic continue to be directed well east of the Maritimes.

A lot going on for weather as we get the month of October started in the Maritimes. Wind remains an issue for wildfires in the region. Neither storm in the Atlantic is expected to bring us weather this week.

Wildfire and winds

Gusty wind conditions continue to be an issue for the wildfire in Kings County, Nova Scotia.

The wind will remain northerly with gusts peaking near 40 km/h Wednesday afternoon and early evening. The wind will diminish tonight but won’t become completely light for the area. The air is generally dry with only about a 40% chance of a light showers in the vicinity of the wildfire on Wednesday. Wildfire smoke may be reducing air quality locally for parts of both Kings and Lunenburg Counties today. Both areas under an Air Quality Statement.

High pressure returns over the region Thursday. No precipitation in the forecast for that day with low relative humidity in the air. Wind will remain northerly with gusts 20 to 30 km/h, a slight improvement over the wind conditions Wednesday.

No significant rain is in the forecast for the Maritimes over the next several days. A chance of scattered showers on Sunday.

Risk of frost

As the sky clears in New Brunswick tonight most low temperatures will fall into a range of -2 to +4. That in combination with a light wind will create a risk of widespread frost in that province Wednesday night into early Thursday morning. A Frost Advisory has been issued for the entire province by Environment Canada.

Low temperatures for both Prince Edward Island and Nova Scotia are expected to generally range 4 to 8 degrees. A risk of patchy frost inland at lower elevations.

Bermuda under a Hurricane Warning

Humberto has now completed a transition to a post-tropical storm while north of Bermuda. The remnants will hold well east of the Maritimes as it moves towards the North Atlantic. No weather impacts expected.

Hurricane Imelda is now category-two in strength and will approach Bermuda Wednesday night. Bermuda is under a Hurricane Warning with impacts that could include hurricane force winds, 50 to 100 mm of rain, and a dangerous storm surge.

After passing Bermuda Imelda is forecast to hold just east of the outermost marine districts of Atlantic Canada. Interests operating in those water should be monitoring a detailed marine forecast. No weather from Imelda is expected to impact the Maritimes.

Some larger waves produced by the storms will break near the Atlantic coastline of Nova Scotia Wednesday night and Thursday. Wave action forecast to diminish Friday and the weekend.
