A slick mix of snow, ice pellets, and freezing rain developed in the Maritimes Sunday night. The icy weather continued into Monday morning for much of the region. Temperatures are rising through the day on Monday and the weather is turning over to rain, drizzle and fog.

Freezing rain warnings
As of noon Monday there were freezing rain warnings in effect for a large part of the Maritimes, including most of New Brunswick – with the exception of southwestern areas of the province – Prince Edward Island and Cape Breton.
Those areas can expect a transition from freezing rain to rain Monday afternoon. A risk of freezing rain will linger for northeastern areas of New Brunswick, including Campbellton across the Acadian Peninsula, into Monday night.
So far the Maritimes has avoided the same severity of impact from the freezing rain as has been experienced in parts of Ontario.

Heavy rain
Rainfall warnings are in effect for Nova Scotia and the Bay of Fundy coastline of New Brunswick. Rain totals of 20-to-50 mm are expected through Tuesday morning.
Rain, drizzle and fog will be present Monday evening and night. A final round of rain will arrive in the Maritimes early Tuesday morning. That is expected to be heavy at times for Nova Scotia on Tuesday.
The rain will clear southern New Brunswick, western Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island by noon Tuesday. The rain will clear eastern Nova Scotia Tuesday afternoon.

This week
A ridge of high pressure moves in Wednesday. It will be a mainly sunny day for the region but with cooler temperatures. Daytime highs on Wednesday will range from -2 C to +3 C in New Brunswick, 0 C to 6 C in Nova Scotia, and 0 C to 2 C for Prince Edward Island.
Another low-pressure system is forecast to move through on Thursday. Once again precipitation is expected to start as a mix of snow, ice pellets and freezing rain before a turn to rain. Slick surfaces may develop in the icy mix on Thursday.
A chance of flurries or showers follows for Friday. Looking ahead there is a strong possibility of another mix of snow, ice pellets, freezing rain, and rain moving in on Sunday.
