First flurries of the season spotted in the Maritimes

CTV Atlantic meteorologist Kalin Mitchell shares rain reports for the Maritimes plus details on a chilly October night ahead that has a risk of frost.

First fall flurries?

A significant change in temperature for the Maritimes behind the front. We started off the week with high temperatures well into the 20’s and some touching 30. On Thursday the high temperatures struggled in a range of 8 to 13 degrees.

It was cooler at the surface but even colder aloft. With enough cold air above us we can get flurries even if temperatures on the surface are a few to several degrees above zero. That seems to have been the case in some of the high terrain in northern New Brunswick today.

Kevin DeMerchant sent me a report and a few pictures of flurries in the Christmas Mountains area of northern New Brunswick. No accumulation in the flurries is expected.

This would be the first flurry report I’ve had sent to me this fall so far.

Frosty night

Low temperatures in the Maritimes will fall into a range of 0 to 6 degrees by early Friday morning. Communities in western New Brunswick could end up as chilly as -4 to 0.

The colder conditions along with the winds easing and the clouds clearing gives a risk of frost.

Environment Canada has issued a frost advisory for most of New Brunswick and western Nova Scotia.

Rain reports

A cold front brought in a helpful amount of rain across much of the Maritimes Wednesday into Thursday morning.

Many locations pick up 10-to-30 mm with a few pockets of 30-to-50 mm.

Unfortunately, a few spots ended up getting shorted on rain totals including parts of northern New Brunswick and Atlantic coastal Nova Scotia. Communities in those areas finished with less than 5 mm of rain in some cases.
